Numeracy learning in Year 1 📈

4th Nov 2024
📈 Year 1 Numeracy. We have to identify the numerals and then create a set for the given numeral.
Here's a simple, fun game for parents to help their Year 1 child learn to identify numerals and create sets.

Game: Number Treasure Hunt

This game combines numeral recognition with hands-on counting practice to keep children engaged and learning!

What You'll Need:

A set of numeral cards (0 to 10) or you can write the numbers on pieces of paper.

Small items for counting (like building blocks, toy cars, coins, or anything you have at home).

A box or basket for the collected items (optional but fun).

How to Play:

1. Set Up: Place the numeral cards face down in a stack.

2. Pick a Card: Have your child draw a numeral card from the stack.

3. Identify the Numeral: Ask them to read the numeral aloud. If they are unsure, help them name it and practice a few times.

4. Treasure Hunt: Once they correctly identify the numeral, they must go on a “treasure hunt” around the room or house to collect that number of items. For example, if they pick the number 4, they should collect four toy cars or four spoons.

5. Create a Set: Once they've collected the correct number of items, ask them to count out the items in front of you to confirm the set.

6. Repeat: Shuffle the cards and continue the game.

Tips for Parents:

Encourage Counting: If your child is still developing counting skills, count aloud together as they gather the items.

Mix It Up: Use a variety of objects to keep it interesting (e.g., fruit, crayons, or stuffed animals).

Make It Physical: If they have lots of energy, make the hunt active (e.g., run to collect each item or do a silly dance after creating a set).

Praise and Encourage: Celebrate each correct numeral identification and set creation to boost their confidence.

Learning Benefits:

Numeral Recognition: The game helps children recognise and name numerals.

Counting Practice: It reinforces counting skills as they gather and arrange objects.

Hands-On Learning: Using physical items engages multiple senses, making the learning experience more effective.

This game can be easily adapted to focus on different numerals or increase the range as your child progresses. Enjoy your learning adventure together!
