From our orchard 🥧 🍎

10th Sep 2024
Today Year 2 made Apple Crumble using the apples we harvested from our orchard. This activity was cross curricular involving following a procedural, observing changes that happen when we heat food, weighing ingredients to name but a few. We are looking forward to trying with custard this afternoon . 🙂 Just one of the reasons why Mrs G is one of our favourites! #feedthestaff #savesomeforus 🥧 ❤️💐

Teaching baking in schools offers several important benefits that go beyond simply learning a practical skill:

1. **Math and Science Skills**: Baking involves measuring ingredients, understanding proportions, and following precise temperatures and times. This reinforces math concepts like fractions, ratios, and conversions, as well as scientific principles like chemical reactions.

2. **Life Skills**: Learning how to bake teaches students essential life skills, such as preparing food for themselves and others, which promotes self-sufficiency and healthy eating habits.

3. **Creativity and Problem-Solving**: Baking allows students to experiment with ingredients and recipes, fostering creativity. If a recipe doesn't work, students must troubleshoot and find solutions, building problem-solving abilities.

4. **Patience and Attention to Detail**: Baking requires following steps carefully and waiting for results, teaching students patience and the importance of attention to detail.

5. **Teamwork and Collaboration**: In a classroom setting, baking often involves working in groups, which encourages teamwork and communication.

6. **Cultural Awareness**: Baking can introduce students to different cultures and traditions through foods, promoting diversity and inclusivity.

7. **Mental Health Benefits**: Baking can also have a calming effect, providing a creative and therapeutic outlet for stress, which can support students’ mental well-being.

Overall, baking teaches a wide range of academic, social, and practical skills that are valuable for students’ personal development.
