Winter/Spring 2020

What are Council’s Belfast Employment Academies?

We are working with employers to deliver Employment Academies across a wide range of different sectors to provide Belfast residents with the skills and qualifications needed to apply for hundreds of job opportunities. All Council’s Employment Academies are employer-driven and lead to real jobs.

Who can apply?

Employment Academies are open to anyone living in the Belfast City Council area currently out of work or working less than 16 hours a week. No previous experience or training is required. Preference will be given to those who are economically inactive or long-term unemployed.

Public Sector: we are working with two public sector employers to design new employment academies which provides the key skills and experience needed to apply and these are likely to be:

  • We have 12-15 places on a General Operative Employment Academy
  • We have 12-15 places on an entry-level Business Admin Employment Academy

Transport: we have up to 50 spaces available on our Transport Employment Academies where we are working with public sector employers such as the Education Authority as well as a whole range of haulage and logistics companies to provide people with the licences such as HGV/LGV or D licence needed to apply for live vacancies as a lorry driver or bus driver.

Leisure: we have up to 30-40 spaces on our Leisure Employment Academies with GLL – who operate our leisure centres in Belfast. The employment academies provides industry recognised training for a range of jobs such as recreation assistant (lifeguard), fitness instructor, swim teacher and customer service. Everyone who successfully completes the training is guaranteed a job interview for a live vacancy.

Hotels: we have 15 places on our Housekeeping Employment Academy provides industry recognised training to equip people for a job in housekeeping and everyone who successfully completes the training is guaranteed a job interview with Titanic Hotel and/or the Andras Group who operate Holiday Inn, Hilton@Hampton, Crowne Plaza etc. for their live vacancies.

Social Care: we have 15 places on our Social Care Employment Academy provides training designed in partnership with key employers and the regulatory body NI Social Care Council (NISCC) for a range of roles such as care assistants, domiciliary care workers and support workers. Everyone who successfully completes the training is guaranteed a job interview for live vacancies.

Construction: we have up to 15 places on our Construction Employment Academy where we are working with CITB, Graham the contractors for the Belfast Transport Hub as well other contractors- who will interview all those who successfully complete for their vacancies.
