Clocks go forwards this weekend!

22nd Mar 2018

We can't wait for those bright mornings and evenings to roll around again.

If like us you're already fed up with the dark mornings and evenings you'll be glad to hear there isn't too long to wait until the clocks change for Spring 2018.

You've probably already started to notice a slight stretch in the evenings, a sure sign that we're heading out of the winter months and getting towards the spring.

So when do the clocks change?

This year British Summer Time starts on Sunday, March 25 at 1am, so you put your clocks FORWARD by one hour.

Lots of you won't even need to worry about manually putting the time forward by one hour as lots of modern devices such as smart phones, Sky TV etc will automatically amend the time for you.

But other devices will need to be changed for example, your watch, clocks, you car clock and even your oven.

The easiest way to remember if the clocks go forward or back is to memorise the phrase, Spring forward, Fall back.

Meaning in the Spring we put them forward by one hour and in the Fall (American word for Autumn) we put them back an hour.

Why do we need to change the clocks twice a year? It's a concept that stems from the first world war, when Germany and Austria, followed by the allies, used to save on coal usage.

It was invented by George Vincent Hudson, a New Zealand entomologist in 1895, while British businessman William Willett is also credited with the idea as a way of getting up earlier and so having more daylight hours after work.

While the UK has always had daylight savings time since it was first introduced, it came into widespread use across the world during the 1970s because of the energy crisis.

So don't forget: Clocks go FORWARD by 1 HOUR at 1AM on SUNDAY, MARCH 25.
