Accelerated reading has arrived in St. Joseph's PS

21st Dec 2017

Well done to our children who met their points target in our accelerated reading this term! Keep reading over the Christmas holidays - it really does make a difference!

What is Accelerated Reading?

At its heart, Accelerated Reader is simple.

A student reads a book, takes an online quiz, and gets immediate feedback.
Accelerated Reader gives our teachers the information they need to monitor students’ reading practice and make informed decisions to guide their future learning.

A comprehensive set of reports reveals how much a student has been reading, at what level of complexity, and how well they have understood what they have read. Vocabulary growth and literacy skills are also measured, giving our teachers insight into how well students have responded to reading schemes and class instruction.

Research shows that:

  • There is a positive link between positive attitudes towards reading and scoring well on reading assessments (Twist et al, 2007).
  • Regularly reading stories or novels outside of school is associated with higher scores in reading assessments (PIRLS, 2006; PISA, 2009).
  • International evidence supports these findings; US research reports that independent reading is the best predictor of reading achievement (Anderson, Wilson and Fielding, 1988)

Encourage your child to read for pleasure - 15minutes every night will make a difference to your child's reading ability! And remember, the Falls library is free to join and only 10 minutes walk from school.
